West End Frome
A Somerset town house is imaginatively updated to create a bright, calm home for a busy family life
Emil Eve’s design for this Victorian end of terrace rearranges the building’s internal spaces to create connection and flow without altering its footprint. The back of the house has been dramatically opened, with two glazed sliding doors incorporating the courtyard into the new kitchen, dining and living space.
The kitchen area is filled with natural light from the glass doors and roof light. Bespoke solid oak joinery includes built in pantry cupboards, a contemporary dresser, and a generous kitchen island which extends into the living area to tie the space together. Hexagonal terracotta floor tiles are used across the inside and outdoor spaces, uniting the courtyard with the L-shaped kitchen-living room.
The building’s period features have been restored, and are referenced in the new additions, including an arched pocket door which creates a connection from the entrance right through to the back of the house.
A simple palette has been used throughout, allowing the qualities of the natural materials to shine through. Soft neutrals are offset by moments of richer colours – blues and greens that bring visual impact.
