Farley Farmhouse

This extension and refurbishment of a rural farmhouse in Wiltshire makes imaginative use of vernacular materials, with contemporary detailing that also complements the building’s historic character.

A compact extension inserted into an empty pocket of space at the centre of the house unlocks the layout of a previously disjointed ground floor, creating an instinctive flow through the living spaces and out to the garden.

The new volume echoes the proportions and profile of an existing stable wing, which was restored and refurbished to create a double-pitched kitchen and dining space.

A series of full length windows and doors open on to a kitchen garden. Openings were positioned to catch the sun throughout the day and light is brought into the kitchen space from above as well as from the garden.

Handmade arrowhead clay tiles clad the new façade, and slimline black steel framed doors and windows have been inserted to match new powder coated copings and cills.

Internally, terracotta lighting and a new floor of handmade terracotta tiles bring warm earthy tones to the kitchen and dining area. Painted timber panelling lines the walls to create a datum with the openings and unify the space.
